CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The massive, electronic gate slowly opened as the guards on the gate waved the Maserati through. It didn’t drive its usual fast pace along the winding driveway that led to the main house. It drove slowly, as if it was lumbering along. And when it stopped, it just sat there.

Teddy was behind the wheel. Nikki was on the passenger seat. After a few seconds of just sitting there, he looked at her. “Are you ready?”

Nikki looked at him. “No. Not at all. Are you?”

Teddy shook his head. “Nope.” Then he exhaled. “But it’s now or never,” he said, got out from under the steering wheel of his car, and made his way around to the passenger seat. He opened the door for Nikki. Nikki got out too.

They held hands, a united front, as they made their way up to Mick’s front door. They didn’t have to knock before the butler was opening the door and letting them in. And they made their way into the living room.

Roz was there. So was Gloria and Big Daddy. But so was Amelia. Which immediately let Teddy and Nikki know that their father had already found out. Somebody had already spilled the beans. They glanced at each other when they saw Amelia, but they didn’t say a word. They continued to walk into the living room. Big Daddy was standing at the living room window, a glass of wine in his hand. Roz, Gloria and Amelia were sitting on the sofa.

Mick was there, too, sitting in his high-back chair in a cardigan sweater, his legs folded, his body as still as still water. Teddy saw his father, and his heart started hammering. This may be one of the hardest things he’d ever done.

“Sit down,” Roz said. But even she didn’t say it with that zip she usually had whenever they came around. They sat in the two high back chairs that flanked the sofa where the ladies sat, and was across from the chair Mick sat in. Mick, they noticed, was staring them down.

“You requested this meeting. Now you’ve got it. The floor is yours,” Roz said.

“He already gave me the third degree,” Amelia said to Teddy. “Now it’s your turn.”

Teddy took a deep breath and then leaned his muscular body forward. “I’m sure everybody knows what this is about,” he said.

“I don’t,” said Gloria. “Ma just said there’s a meeting and you guys were coming over. And Aunt Millie said some Denny guy is her friend. What’s it about?” she asked.

“It’s about a betrayal,” Roz said, looking hard at Amelia and Teddy. “That’s what.”

“It’s not a betrayal, Roz,” said Amelia. “He’s been looking to get out for a long time, and you and Mick know it. I told him about an opening somewhere else because I knew he wanted to get out too. Just because y’all believed it would never happen doesn’t mean it’s a betrayal. He’s a grown-ass man. He can do whatever he wants.”

Mick gave Amelia a chilling look. “Shut the fuck up!” he said with bite.
